Getting the Brain to Stop the Pain

At Orlando Neurosurgery, our team of Highly Skilled Neurosurgeons represents a comprehensive list of neurosurgical specialties. We invest a great deal of energy toward staying current with the latest research and techniques. We are members of over 15 medical organizations who are leading efforts in specific areas of neurosurgery and neurodegenerative disease. View Our List Of Memberships And Affiliations.

Several of our physicians are members of the Facial Pain Association, (FPA) formerly known as the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association (TNA), a non-profit, 501(c)(3). FPA has emerged as the world’s leading resource for information and health care guidance for all people suffering from neuropathic facial pain. Guiding the association is a volunteer governing board and a Medical Advisory Board of highly skilled experts in neurosurgery, neuroscience, general medicine, and dentistry.

Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN), also called tic douloureux, is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal (fifth cranial) nerve, which carries sensation from your face to your brain. TN is a form of neuropathic pain (pain associated with nerve injury or nerve lesion.) Although sometimes debilitating, the disorder is not life-threatening.

TN is a painful affliction in which the patient experiences jolts of facial pain which may be triggered by vibration or mild stimulation of your face such as from brushing your teeth, applying makeup, eating, drinking, talking, or being exposed to the wind. Attacks of pain episodes can last a few seconds to as long as a few minutes. The attacks often worsen over time, with fewer and shorter pain-free periods before they recur. Eventually, the pain-free intervals may disappear and medication to control the pain becomes less effective.

Thank you to the Facial Pain Association for providing the following resources.

View Webinar – Getting The Brain To Stop The Pain – Neuromodulation (in this context) is the way to control pain by delivering low power electrical signals directly to the nerves or brain through an implanted or external device, without producing any irreversible injury to the nervous system. On this webinar, Dr. Jeffrey Brown, FPA Medical Advisory Board Chairman has a conversation with Konstantin Slavin, MD, Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, University of Illinois at Chicago and FPA Medical Advisory Board Member about neuromodulation and the applications for neuropathic facial pain patients.
